The Cruelest Injustice

I received the cruelest injustice in the Turbo Hundo last night. And I'm not talking about a bad beat. This is much more traumatic. When I was down to heads up with WLUstudent, the Full Tilt servers crashed. And since he had slightly more chips than me, he got credit for the win. What bothers me is that I didn't even get the chance to win it. And all thepokerdb stats and stuff will show it as a second place finish for me. I'm so angry, that I'm considering not even playing it tonight. I know that's extreme, but that's how bitter I am.

So yesterday, my ENTS doctor confirmed what I had always suspected: I am acutely allergic to cats. It is quite upsetting news. I had always thought that if the whole marriage-and-kids thing didn't work out, I could just get a bunch of cats and be the "crazy cat lady". Now what am I going to do? Get a bunch of dogs? A level or two later, I was short stacked with about 110k (which was about 5 rounds) and moved all-in in late position with KQ clubs. One of the blinds called with TT and I lost the race. I got 54th place.

It was very disappointing to get so deep in both tourneys at not make a final table. After getting ninth in the Mulligan last week, I had told myself that I was going to win it this week. And I came pretty close (15th). But, alas, it was not meant to be. Oh well. There's always next week.

On a positive note, I was able to win my seat into the Poker Stars WCOOP $2,600 main event for $40 bucks, which I greatly needed considering that I didn't have nearly enough money on Stars for all the events that I want to play.

Normally when I'm this short, I wouldn't go all in with such a weak hand knowing that it will be easy for my opponents to call. However, a few situational factors make it a reasonable play in this case.
1. TollBoothBandit (664,403) had not been dealt in this hand because it was the first hand of the final table. He had been moved inbetween the small blind and the button and therefore had to sit out one hand. So if I waited one more hand to go all-in, I would have two additional people behind me that might call.
2. kilainstinkt was also short stacked a wouldn't make a loose call for most of their chips.
3. The next few people who would be in the big blind were all fairly loose.
4. joeramos333 may fold some trash hands that have me beat (93, T2, etc...

WSOP Day 1 B

I don't remember much about Day 1, but I will attempt to reconstruct it as best I can.

I showed up about 45 minutes late, which was great for me considering A) Last year I was over an hour and a half late, and B) I had bet Joel .1% of our main event winnings that I would get there before 12:50.

I didn't recognize anyone at my table except for Max Pescatori, and he was on my left, so that wasn't good. We started with 20k in chips (I had just under 19,000 by the time I got there) and I somehow got whittled down to 8k. The biggest pot I lost was when someone raised and I called with 77. Then someone else made a small reraise. The original raiser called and so did I because it was only slightly bigger than a min raise and I was getting the right price to flop a set. I missed, however, and folded the flop. I didn't lose anymore than 2k on that hand, so I'm not quite sure where the rest went. I think I just lost a series of small pots.

It was folded to me in the small blind with something like 96 off. I limped in and Max checked. The flop was something like 944. I bet and Max called. I sensed that he was floating the flop to take it away on the turn. There had been a number of times throughout the day that I had taken a stab at a pot (sometimes I had a piece, sometimes I didn't) and then folded when someone else showed strength. So Max probably thought that it was just another probe bet. Plus, I would probably slow play a 4, so my bet meant that I either had a nine or was just taking a stab at a dry flop, and mathematically it is much more likely that I had nothing. Anyways, the turn was a middle card. I checked, Max bet, and I called. The river was another middle called. I checked and Max made a fairly large bet. I was pretty sure I was going to call, but given that it was for most of my chips, I thought about it for a bit. It was possible that he had indeed floated the flop, but then managed to make a straight. But I didn't think he would have made such a big value bet with a straight on a paired board when I had shown weakness. So I called and he said "Your nine is good" and mucked.

Soon after that I raised in early position with AA. Max called, and an Italian guy reraised. It was folded back to me. If Max wasn't in the pot, I would have considered just flat calling. But I didn't want to let him in for cheap, so I reraised. Max folded and the Italian called. The flop came a beautiful Axx. I checked. He bet, and I moved in for what was about a min raise. In hindsight, I probably could have just called. No sense scaring him off if he was almost drawing dead with a hand like KK, QQ, or JJ. But I figured it was best to just stick it all in right there because A) There was a flush draw possible (even though it was very unlikely that he had a flush draw) B) He was pretty much pot committed, and C) It was already a very large pot. He called with AK and I doubled up.

My position at my table wasn't very good. The loose/aggressive people were on my left and the squeezers were on my right. A couple guys on my left really liked reraising preflop, especially when someone raised in late position. I adjusted by not raising in late position without a good hand, and instead raised the tight people's blinds almost every round. Even though I had to do so in early/middle position, it seemed to work fairly well because the reraisers gave me credit for a hand instead of playing back at me, and the tightwads almost never defended their blinds. By the end of the night, one squeezer had gotten fairly short, and started playing back by going all in. That same guy was at my table again on Day 2, but it took me over an hour to recognize him, and I only realized it because he was wearing the same hat. It's pretty pathetic that I can play with someone for almost 13 hours and then not even recognize them two days later.

Do you remember what it felt like as a kid to be on a roller coaster and have the ride come to an end and think, "Just this once, I wish they would somehow forget to stop us and we would get to go around again."? I would hope for that everytime, to no avail. Until one day when I was on The Wild Cat at the old Elitch's, it actually started to go around a second time! I thought to myself, "Yes! Yes! It's actually happening!" Then, part way up the first big slope, they stopped the roller coaster and made us walk back down. The ride was closed the rest of the evening due to safety concerns. It was very disappointing.

WSOP day 3 and 4

Alright, by request I will do a post about day 3 and 4 of WSOP, but I'm not happy about it. (Notice how my chip stack slowly dwindles as the pictures progress.)

(400 ante, 1500/3000 blinds) Everything started out great on Day 3. I came into the day with over 400k in chips (around twice average) and planned to play very aggressively until the bubble broke.

I raised a tight guy's blind with Tx of hearts. The old guy on my left reraised me 12k more (whom I later found out was Dennis Perry. Apparently I knocked him out of a tourney at Caesar's but I don't really remember it.) It was probably pretty stupid to call, but I did anyways. It was a fairly small raise (I was getting 3:1) and I had a lot of chips. Plus, I didn't want people at the table thinking I was just raising with junk and they could easily reraise me off hands. The flop was KJ8 with one heart. I checked and Dennis checked behind me. I thought it was possible that he was slow playing a set, but figured it was more likely that he had a hand like QQ or TT. The turn was the 9 of hearts, giving me a flush draw and an open ended straight draw. I bet 30k into a pot of nearly 50k and Dennis folded saying he had queens.

I got moved to a new table with a big stack on my left, whom Paul informed me is a good player and plays a lot of big tourneys. It definitely somewhat interfered with my bubble-time stealing. But other factors contributed, and I just kept running into hands.

I misplayed one hand for sure. I raised in late position with 77 and the old man in the big blind called. The flop came 865 with 2 clubs. The big blind checked and I bet about a little over half the pot. He raised a decent amount and I called. But I shouldn't have called because even if I made my straight (and it wasn't a third club), I still might not have gotten much action with four to a straight on the board. He bet out again on the turn, but he accidentally made a string bet, so the bet was really small and I had to call. The river missed me and I folded to his bet.

Things weren't really going my way, so I decided to lay low for a bit. By the time the bubble broke, I had about an average stack. Rob's stack on my left had gotten really big. He was one of the first persons with over 1 million. Great, just what I need. Oh well. At least he was a cool guy and he wasn't tangling with me too much.

A little bit later on I raised with 99 and the same old man in the bb called. The flop was Axx. He checked and I checked behind. He bet the turn and I folded and he showed an ace.

The tall lagtard on the button limped in and I limped in the small blind with 86 and Rob checked. The flop was something like AQ7 and we all checked. The turn was a 9 giving me a straight draw. It also put a possible flush draw on the board. I bet, Rob folded, and the button called. I figured he had a flush draw. The river was a brick, so I couldn't win unless I bluffed. I bet and he called with middle pair (and a missed flush draw). I should have known better than to try to bluff a lagtard, but at least I was right about the flush draw. I ended the day with about half the average.

I was about ten minutes late for Day 4, which is totally inexcusable considering I only had about 10 rounds to play. It was fine when I was late on Day 1 and 2 because the blinds are so small. And day 3 I had a ton of chips and could easily afford it. But its not ok to be late when it's going to cost me almost 10% of my chips. I guess I should have made another prop bet with Joel. Or have my mom call me repeatedly until I wake up, lol. Next time.

Pi-master was at my table and on my left, which was fun. I raised in late position with 77 and got two callers. The flop came A63 rainbow and the big blind checked. I bet about a third of the pot. The button folded. BB raised and I folded. He said he had 333, although I don't know if I believe it. Unfortunately Pi soon busted when his AK got reraised by a donkey with 22 and he lost the race. Then our table broke.

I think I had about 7 rounds to play at this point, but I'm not exactly sure. It was folded to me in the small blind with 85. I limped in and the big blind checked. The flop came J53 and I bet about half the pot (which was slightly more than a minimum bet) and the big blind went all-in. Based on his body language, I thought I should call. He looked different than he did when he had earlier gone all-in with a full house. But I decided to lay it down because I wasn't at all sure of the accuracy of my read. Plus, he could have been doing that with a hand like 64, in which case he would be close to even money. However, based on his comment after the hand was over, I'm pretty sure he was bluffing. Meh....

A little bit later I had about 4 or 5 rounds to play with AT in the small blind. A guy limped in early position. Once or twice before I had seem him limp in and then fold to a raise, so I didn't necessarily think he had a monster. I figured he was limping with with hands like KQ and small pairs. So I moved in and he had indeed slow played KK. The flop came ATQ. But a J on the turn gave him a straight. No ace or ten for me on the river. If I had just limped in, I could have moved in on the flop and taken it down. Oh well, hindsight is always 20/20. I definitely regret folding the 85 more so than moving in with the AT.

There was a kid from Denmark that I knew was going to going to give me trouble. Two or three times I raised his blind, he reraised me and I folded. So I decided that the next time I raised his blind, it would be with a hand I was willing to go with. So a little bit later (200 ante 600/1200 blinds) i raised to 3k in late position with 88 and the sb called. Denmark reraised to 11k and I went all-in for about 40k total. We had about the same amount of chips and i figured he was just squeezing again and couldn't call for about all his chips. They both folded.

It was folded around to me in the small blind with A3. Sometimes I just limp in this spot, especially if I had been raising a lot. I limped for 1,200, and the annoying guy with no internal monologue made it 3,500. I call. Flop T38. I check/called 3,500. Turn was a blank, check check. River was a blank and I check/called 3,500. He mucked and said good call.

(200 ante 800/1600 blinds) I bet 4k in the cutoff with AA. Denmark called in the big blind. He led out for 5k on a TT6 board. I didn't want to slow play in case he had a str8 or flush draw, so I raised to 18k and he folded. I could tell that he was getting annoyed and didn't like folding to me, so I figured he'd makea play at me sometime soon. A little bit later I raised to 4k with A6 clubs. Sb called and Denmark reraised 15,600 total. I figured this was a good time to defend my raise (which I hadn't done at all that day) because I had position, a healthy stack, and a decent hand. Plus, Denmark could very well just be messing around. Small blind folded. The flop was AJ8 with one club. He made a small bet of 12k and I called. The turn was a small club and Denmark went all in for about 38k. I was getting about 2.6 to 1, and I thought there was a good chance that my aces were good, and if Denmark happened to have me beat, I had the nut flush draw to fall back on. So I called. He had T9 for a straight draw and missed. I was very glad to have gotten rid of that thorn in my side.

Chris Overgard (a pretty good player from Chicago who had a lot of chips thanks to an early 100k gift) raised to 4,600 in late position and I called in the big blind with red nines. In hindsight, I should have given more consideration to reraising preflop. Anyways, the flop comes J8x with two diamonds and we both checked. The turn was the 4 of diamonds and I bet 6,500. He called. I put him on a flush drw with the A or K of diamonds. The river was another 4. I checked/called his 9k bet and he showed his T9 of clubs for a busted straight draw.

(300 ante 1000/2000 blinds. I had about 240k in chips.) Tobey Maguire bet 5,500 in early position. Since he had over 50k in chips, and there hadn't been many reraises at my table, I decided to call so that I might win a big pot if a 9 came. The button called, too. Sure enough, the flop was a beautiful K92 rainbow. Tobey led out for 8k and I called. The button folded. At this point I put Tobey on AK and hoped he overplay it. He reluctantly check/called my 13k bet on the turn. The river was an Ace and he led out for 16k. I was a little worried that he had a set of aces, but he only had another 15k behind him and I certainly wanted to get the rest if he had AK (which it seemed like he did). So I put him all in and he immediately called with KK. Ouch, I didn't see that one coming. Hats off to Spiderman, who played the hand quite well.

My table started out the day so juicy. I had a big donkey on my right with a huge stack, and a couple of squeezers on my left with danty stacks. But each elimination made the table tougher and tougher as the donkeys got replaced with aggressive players with a lot of chips. Even though I was above average in chips, my table had many monster stacks, so I was only about average for my table. The three guys to my left all had a lot of chips and liked to raise and reraised preflop often, so I decided to play it tight. We only had to play for another hour or so that day, and I would have a new table draw with shorter stacks to deal with. In one of the last hands of the night I flopped a set of tens against a guy with QQ on a T85 board and won a big pot, which boosted my chip count to almost 400k.

This is not a good turn card to bet. I will probably get raised if either of them made two pair. It is interesting how this hand is similar to the first hand I played against Carter Cash in which I folded my Queens (which was almost certainly a bad fold given the hands I later saw him showdown, but I had no way of knowing that at the time). In this case, Beyond Thoughts might just have TT or JJ. And earlier, I had seen him raise and make a big reraise preflop with AA, so I thought it wasn't very likely that he had smooth called with AA or KK. Plus, I had just put a beat on him, so I thought he might push with a flush draw.

The range of hands I typically put my opponent on in this situation is (in order of most likely to least likey): AK spades, AA, KK, JJ, AJ, a random bluff, or QQ. I'm about 50% to win against AK spades, and a huge underdog to AA, KK, and JJ. And a decent favorite to AJ or a random hand. But because I had never played with Carter Cash before and had no reason to believe that he was the type of player to completely overplay AJ or make some random bluff, I choose to lay it down. I finally won my WSOP seat last night! I hadn't actually been trying very hard until last week when it occurred to me that the main event was only a few weeks away and I didn't have a seat yet. So I resolved to start playing more satellites. I had two close calls finishing 10th in both after horrendous beats. Tonight I had planned on going down to the Rio for the nightly mega, but then I happened to notice that FT had a $1,000 satellite. I had never played a 1k on-line sat (because I usually do the $200 ones) but this is the last week to win a seat on FT so I decided to give it a shot. It's ironic because last year I won my seat in the first week that FT began running them, and this year I won it in the last week.

The following hand occurred when there were about 18 people left. Top 13 all got seats (12K prize package) and 14, 15, and 16 all got some money back.

So, I probably totally misplayed this hand, but given the unique circumstance, I'm not sure. In a normal tourney, I would certainly be willing to put all my chips in with that flop. I probably had either the best hand or the best draw, so it is unlikely that I would be in really bad shape. I would normally go for an all-in check raise. And if he happened to check behind me, it wouldn't be that bad.

However, this is a situation in which my main goal is to not go broke. There were only 18 people left and I just had to squeak into the top 13 to get a seat. CrazyLond had me covered and I knew he was willing to gamble. But I think if I was going to fold to a raise, I probably should have bet a little less on the flop. Or perhaps a check/call would have been a good approach. As it was, my fold left me in 15th place and needing to get some chips back.

Being one of the short stacks and having only 4 rounds to play, I think moving in with JTs on the button is a fairly standard play. I didn't like having to do it, but there were still a few more people to get through and I'd never make it if I didn't pick up some blinds and antes. His call with the K7 is pretty reckless in my opinion. He had a lot of chips and no reason to take 60/40 gambles when he could just coast into the top 13.

A pretty easy laydown considering the circumstances. With a short stack in the big blind there was no reason to play the AK. The bb folded as well. A few hands later he moved in for about 6,000 and got called by 3 or 4 people (including me in the bb with 62) and lost to a deuce on the river. I'm so relieved to have won my seat. I can't believe I waited until the very end to start trying. Why do I always have to cut things so close.

So, I played my 3rd wsop event yesterday, and it went better than the first two considering A) I was "only" 15 minutes late, and B) I lasted until the second break. There was a $1,500 event today, but i didn't even want to play it. The structure in the tourneys is so bad, and with my inability to show up on time, it just doesn't seem like much sense to play them. So now I think i'm going to start focusing my efforts on The Bellagio Cup. The events don't start until 2:00! And you get so much more room to play around and see some flops. Plus, I like playing events that don't have such a huge number of entrants. First place doesn't pay nearly as much, but I don't really need $700,000 anyways.

UB Sunday 200K Tourney

Due to an early exit from the WSOP ladies event (Does KT ever hold up against K8? And more importantly, who calls a big all in bet with K8?!), I was able to make it home in time to play in UB's Sunday 200K guaranteed tournament. There were 31 or so people left and we were playing 7 handed for quite some time. gbmantis had been raising a lot of pots and playing aggressively after the flop. bgizzel had been fairly aggressive as well and using his positional advantage against me. I thought that the best way to counteract these two was to force them to gamble and play a big pot. Although, now I'm not so sure if that is the right approach.

At the time, I thought that I had made a huge mistakes. But some of my poker pals have pointed out that because of the circumstances (such gbmantis's frequent preflop raises) and my stack size, it was the right play to make. If i waited a couple more rounds to make a move, I would no longer have fold equity. On the other hand, gbmantis had raised in early/mid position at a full ten-handed table, which is quite different from his previous raises in mid/late position at a seven-handed table. What do you think?

The only hand I can beat (beside a random bluff) is AK with the Ace or King of hearts or QQ with the Queen of hearts. And if he has AA or an overplayed JJ and now made trips, I'm almost drawing dead.

For most of my poker career, I have been very methodical in observing and taking notes on how my opponents play. But recently I had become lazy and stopped doing this. I would be doing other things (checking e-mail, watching tv, etc...) instead of watching the game. I would also play way too many tables at once. So a few weeks ago I resolved to regain my focus, and now my results have greatly improved. Almost every session has been a winning one. I can't believe that all this time the only thing I had to do maintain my edge was pay attention.

I've played with BlueOceans before, and from what I can remember, he plays fairly aggressive/loose, but he isn't stupid. I think he did indeed have the six and overbet for value. My call on the turn showed that I either was slow playing the six (in which case a big river bluff on his part would be really stupid) or that I had a King. So I think he thought I'd have to call with the King. It's also possible that he had a King, too, and was just trying to buy a split pot. But if I called, I'd have to risk 280 to win 387 (or 333 for a chop). So the insufficient pot odds and the fact that it would make sense for him to play a six that way made this a relatively easy laydown.

I'm very mad at myself for how I played this hand. In the last hour or so, there had been 3 times that BlueOceans raised preflop and then check/folded it to me on the flop. So I knew he was looking to play back at me. He had even shown a check raise bluff on another table. So I think I should have just checked the flop and then called him down if he bet. But after I bet the flop, I should have been prepared to stick to my guns when I knew he was making a move. Oh well, at least it was a small pot.

Side Note: Throught the rest of the session, I noticed that BlueOceans enjoyed showing a bluff any chance he could get, so that makes me even more confident that my laydown in the beginning of the session was correct. He'd never pass up the chance to show a bluff.

I decided to call the reraise pf because I thought it was a good opportunity to defend my raise. I had already folded a few times to a reraise, and I didn't want people thinking that I was always raising with garbage and I would simply fold to a reraise. Suit connectors are a good hand to protect your raises with because you are very likely to be live and it will be hard for your opponent to put you on that hand. Those reasons coupled with deep chip stacks and having position led me to call. When he checked the flop, I thought he could be trapping with a big hand like QQ or AA. I knew that a lot of good cards could come for me on the turn (flush drw, str8 drw, two pair, trips) and didn't want to get check raised of the hand, so I just checked behind him. The turn gave me a str8 draw and he once again checked to me. Now I thought my 7's were probably best and I should protect them. Even if he got stubborn with JJ or TT, I had a lot of outs.

This is one of the few times late in a tourney when I thought that it was best not to steal. Numerous times at that table I had opened in late position and had to fold to a reraise, so I didn't have a very good image. Plus, the small blind was an aggressive player who would likely shove with anything decent. And since he only had about 12K, I would be getting almost 2:1 to make the call. So I'd either have to make an uncomfortable call or an uncomfortable fold. But I'm not sure if those reasons are good enough to justify the fold. Any thoughts?A little bit later, Cunningham was short stacked and moved in with KTs and I called with AQs and won. So I get a $200 bounty and a Full Tilt shirt. I'm pretty excited about the shirt.
